Well Water Testing

The Virginia Corporative Extension will again be providing county residents with an opportunity to have their well water tested. To participate you must pre-register before August 14, 2023. Each testing kit is $65 and is non-refundable.

Due to the limited number of kits, availability will be on a first come, first served basis. So if you're interested, please don't delay.

Payments can be by cash, but must be in the exact amount, since change cannot me made. Payment can also be by money order or check, but there is a $50 returned check fee if your check is returned for non-sufficient funds.

Payment can also be made by credit card, but must be made with Destiny One. That sounds kind of complicated. Exact cash, check, or money order is probably the easiest.

Each test kit costs $65 each. Kits will be available for pick up at the Marshall Center (8800 Courthouse Road), from August 14-18 only between the hours of 8:30 AM and 4:00 PM, kits will not be available earlier. Use the entrance at the right side of the building when picking up your kit.

Homeowners who have a water treatment system may want to purchase two kits and have the water tested both before it enters the treatment system and after. This will allow homeowners to test the safety of their water as well as the effectiveness of any water treatment system.

Registration must be in person and be completed before August 14. A person will not be considered registered until a completed registration form and full payment has been received.

Kits contain instructions on how to go about testing the water. Participants can also watch a video on how to collect the water when they obtain their kits or at https://www.wellwater.bse.vt.edu.

Water samples must be dropped off at the front of the Marshall Center on the morning of August 23, 2023 between 7:00 and 8:00 AM. NO EXCEPTIONS AND NO REFUND if the time windows are missed. It is important to meet the time deadline because the truck with the samples will leave promptly at 8:00 AM to make sure the samples are not corrupted by unnecessary time delay. The samples are driven to Virginia Tech where they will be tested.

Collected water samples must be kept cold and should be delivered to the Marshall Center on August 23, 2023 in a cooler with ice. The cooler will be returned to yo8766u when you drop off your samples.

A results interpretation meeting will take place at 6:30 PM on September 19, 2023 via Zoom. The meeting can be joined with meeting ID 876 6747 4924 at https://virginiatech.zoom.us/j/87667474924. Results will be mailed to everyone unable to attend the meeting.
