Propane Pricing Information

Most residents in Summers Landing use AmeriGas, although often not by choice. Summers Landing was originally serviced by Columbia Propane, which was purchased by AmeriGas about 12 to 15 years ago, leaving most of the Summers Landing residents with AmeriGas. When residents call AmeriGas to complain about the high cost of propane, they are usually told that the price is based on a contract with the HOA; however, there is no contract between AmeriGas and Summers Landing HOA and THERE NEVER HAS BEEN. The price is whatever AmeriGas decides to give HOA residents. Occasionally, if we manage to convince AmeriGas that many of the HOA’s residents are prepared to switch propane companies, AmeriGas may give HOA residents a better price than usual. However, the threat of switching to another propane company will not work every year, especially when AmeriGas sees no one is switching companies.

Please email our HOA Board President, Mr. John Thyen, if you'd like to receive propane price information from AmeriGas and the other local companies that service our community. Additionally, each time you get a propane delivery please email John at jdthyen@gmail.com with your price information so we can make a better comparative cost analysis and because a number of companies change their price per gallon with each delivery. For example, in January 2019, AmeriGaschanged its price at least three different times ($2.932 to $2.888 to $2.74), making it very difficult to keep up with the prices. The price charged depended on when it was delivered. The HOA Board is tracking prices in hopes of identifying a company that consistently offers the best price; so far, no such pattern has emerged. However, the more price information we receive for our residents, the more likely we are to find a pattern.

These prices can be used by our residents to help us determine whether or not their propane provider’s prices are somewhat competitive and may provide some of our residents with a price point to bargain with. If you convince your propane provider that you are willing to switch, because their prices are not competitive, you may be able to negotiate a slight lower rate as many companies do not want to lose their customers.
